When it comes to most personal care products, the conventional ones are often filled with toxins and chemicals that impact our health and don’t really do much good for our skin and hair in the long run. Off-the-counter hair care products often strip our hair from the natural oils, leaving it dry and damaged. When we say natural hair products, we’re talking about chemical-free ways of making sure your hair looks and feels its best – today and in the long run.

I saw improvement in my hair, and the reason is that I totally transformed my hair care routine from one that contained a bunch of crap to minimal and natural. I stopped dying my hair (which I used to do often), and I threw out any product that contained toxins. Here are some of my favourite products and tips to get those locks feeling healthy and vibrant.

Tune into your overall health

The truth is that your overall health impacts your hair (and skin). Nutrition matters. If you have transitioned into a vegetarian or vegan diet, taking a B12 supplement is essential. So tune in to your body keep it healthy and hydrated.

Keep it Minimal

It’s true when they say, “less is more.” There is absolutely no need to use ten different products and shampoos to keep your hair looking its best. Instead, think about a few natural hair products that will suit the type of hair you have. And when it comes to washing it, also believe minimal. Don’t wash your hair every day.

Pick a Natural Shampoo

Have you ever read the labels on your shampoo bottles? If you haven’t, I urge you to give it a try. The kind of chemicals and toxins you’ll find will shock you. Just to name a few: sodium lauryl sulphate, citric acid, sodium chloride, artificial fragrances, glycol and etc. The list goes on and on. The chemicals you’ll find in your regular shampoo will leave your hair feeling dry and damaged.

The good news is that there are endless options for natural and organic shampoos. They’ll be gentle on your scalp and rough on dirt, leaving your hair feeling clean and nourished without exposing you to harmful ingredients.

Apple Cider Vinegar

This may surprise you a little. But one of my favourite natural hair products has to be good old apple cider vinegar. I can’t go on about how luxurious it leaves my hair. Simply add a few tablespoons to a cup of water and rinse your hair, and then shampoo. Apple cider vinegar balances the pH level of your scalp and hair, which helps detangle your hair, maintain bouncy curls and keep your hair smooth and shiny.

Moisturize & Style with Coconut Oil

If you’re into personal care products that are natural and inexpensive, then you’re going to want to get yourself a nice jar of organic coconut oil because, believe me, it will come in handy.

For now, let’s go back to talking about hair care. Coconut oil makes for a unique (and delicious) hair mask. Simply coat your hair with the oil, leave for as long as you want (anything from 20 minutes to overnight), and then shampoo and rinse thoroughly. After a shower, I often use coconut oil right before I brush my hair. I apply some at the tips of my hair, and it keeps my hair frizz-free, moisturized and shiny.

If you’re really into styling your hair and want something more than coconut oil, worry not. There are toxin-free and natural hair styling products that will do the job for you!

There you have it. As promised, simple, practical and affordable ways to keep those locks looking and feeling great with all-natural hair products. On to you: we’d love to hear your natural hair secrets.
