Before, there were mass consumerism and big chain grocery stores carrying heavily processed products people used to grow their own foods and store their yearly fat, grease and oil to make SOAP. JR Liggetts was first introduced to making soap at the tender age of 5. While visiting his Great Aunt Ann in Nebraska, he helped make her yearly batch of soap and JR Liggetts Bar Shampoo.
As mentioned above, this soap was used for everything, and that’s just how things worked. First, great Aunt Ann cooked down the stored fat, grease and oil she saved the previous year and procured the oils needed to make her soap. And then, she used this soap throughout the following year for all her daily cleaning activities. And this was a regular activity done in many parts of rural America during the early and mid 20th centuries.
Little JR really enjoyed the process soaps with his Great Aunt, and he continued this practical and artistic hobby. This remained a hobby for a long time until JR discovered an old recipe card for “Hair Soap,” which caught his attention. He quickly decided to make up a batch, which was the beginning of JR Liggetts Bar Shampoo. He started making these shampoo bars and giving bars to friends and family as gifts for Christmas, birthdays and holidays. And after their first bar, people started asking for more and more. JR and his wife Diane decided to start making and selling Shampoo bars full-time. And they grew their business into the success that it is today!
