December is here! And this means we’ve got a new and unique gift guide for you. The holidays will be knocking on our doors before we know it. This particular season is when we get together with our loved ones, share food, and make new memories for many of us.
But there’s also a sad truth about the season that I want to address here. The holidays have become an excuse for more shopping, consumption, and waste. Unfortunately, this means we’re left with empty pockets, low-quality stuff and an increase in our environmental footprint.
For many of us, exchanging gifts isn’t about being materialistic. Instead, it’s how we show our love to our family and friends. And I’m sure we can all agree that receiving a gift can feel very special. So instead of eliminating advantages altogether, let’s think about how we can shift our buying habits and change those gift ideas. So now let’s talk about ethical, eco-friendly and minimal gift ideas that you can use this holiday season.
Experiences Over things
Here’s my first tip. Think about giving your special someone the best experience rather than ‘things’ to collect. Depending on your budget, the options are endless. It can be anything from a movie ticket to a rock-climbing class. Maybe a planned trip for you and your partner in the New Year? Experience gifts are a great way of showing your loved ones how much you care and how well you know them.
Small Thoughtful Gifts
Gifts are meant to be a gesture. They’re not supposed to break the bank. That doesn’t mean they can’t be unique, though. One of my favourites has to be natural incense (to give and to receive). What’s better than bringing warmth and tranquillity to someone’s home? Another personal favourite of mine will have to be traditional, high-quality bar soaps. These babies need to be in every gift guide if you ask me. Who doesn’t love an all-natural soap? And of course, what are the holidays without some chocolate? These ideas are great if you’re looking for a small gift or want to create your very own personalized bundle.
DIY & Handmade Gifts
Talking about unique gifts: when someone makes something from scratch – with their own hands. If you’re a crafty person, then get to work! DIY projects can be anything from knitting a pair of mittens or making jam jars for your family. It’s time to shine!
Plants
You didn’t think I would put together an eco-friendly gift guide without mentioning plants, did you?
