As you may have guessed, Summer is our favourite time of year here at Living Life Natural. It is full of sunshine and warm weather, road trips to the beach, backyard BBQ’s and just getting to see family and friends. But with all of the heat and sunshine, you are bound to get sweaty once in a while or constantly sweating if you are like me. And sometimes that sweat can lead to odour. The usual response to increased work and smell is to apply more deodorant or antiperspirant. But did you know that regular antiperspirants and deodorants are filled with chemicals? That is why natural deodorant is the best alternative.

The Trouble with Deodorants & Antiperspirants

Most deodorants and antiperspirants contain aluminum. Aluminum compounds used in these products work by closing or clogging pores and sweat ducts to prevent the release of sweat. When sweat builds up behind the blocked ducts, it becomes trapped beneath the skin. This leads to unpleasant side effects such as bumpy and painful inflammation and a buildup of sweat-digesting bacteria, which can cause a foul odour.

Sweating is a natural part of life, and it is one of our body’s primary ways of detoxifying itself. And when we use aluminum-filled antiperspirants and deodorants every day, those toxins are not being flushed out of our bodies. Instead, they go to the lymph system, which is the body’s primary defence against infection. Another con of aluminum is that the acidity in the aluminum compounds causes a reaction with our clothes, giving it that “lovely” yellow stain!

However, the yellow stains are the least of our worries; there are more significant health risks associated with aluminum and other toxic chemicals found in antiperspirants and deodorants. Aluminum compounds are associated with Alzheimer’s disease, cancers and skin irritation. Parabens are a common ingredient in hygiene products such as shampoo and conditioners, and they are related to reproductive disorders, premature aging and causing allergies. Phthalates are associated with cancer, birth defects and infertility. Propylene glycol causes skin, eyes and lung irritation and is associated with a reproductive and fetal neurotoxin that leads to liver damage. These are only some of the harmful chemicals present in our deodorants and antiperspirants that we use in our daily lives, which is a scary and daunting thought. For a more detailed look at the dangers of antiperspirants, be sure to check out our previous blog post that highlights them thoroughly.

Make the Switch to Natural Deodorant Today

To avoid all these scary and harmful chemicals, you should make the switch to natural deodorants today. I know you may be thinking that natural deodorant may not cover the smell or stop the sweat. Still, the research and advances into natural odour-preventing ingredients have come a long way, to the point where some natural deodorants are considered just as effective as their chemical counterparts! Plus, they smell better and won’t give you headaches are those painful bumps in your pits!

Natural deodorants come in paste, spray or roll-on form, and they will leave your clothes stain-free! In addition, using natural deodorants with natural ingredients reduces the probability of suffering from diseases caused by toxic chemicals and the likelihood of experiencing contact dermatitis caused by irritants and allergens.

Natural deodorant uses natural ingredients that smell beautiful such as lemon, cinnamon, nutmeg, tea tree, coconut, rose and sage oil and work to mask and neutralize body odour, allowing you to stay fresh without absorbing any toxins into your body. They also can provide all-day freshness whether you are at the office all day or just out and about.

Some of the key players in natural deodorant and their benefits are listed below:

  • Baking Soda – Neutralizes odour, absorbs sweat
  • Witch Hazel – Natural non-irritating astringent (shrinks pores), evaporates sweat, soothes razor burn
  • Essential Oils (such as rosemary, lichen, sage, lemongrass, and tea tree oil) – Derived from plants, antibacterial properties, prevents odour and growth of sweat-digesting skin bacteria.
  • Mineral Salts (potassium aluminum (alum) sulphate and ammonium alum) – Work by forming a temporary layer on the skin instead of being absorbed into the skin and clogging pores, prevents odour and growth of sweat-digesting skin bacteria, non-irritant
